I’m still struggling to take it in, mate. So many memories of you from time at school at both Camden Road and Sutton Manor right through to recent nights out in Carshalton with Jon and Dave where invariably you ended up entertaining us (and most of the fellow diners !!) with your magic at the ‘Blue Bengal’. In your more serious moments, you spoke of regret at having not worked harder at Sutton Manor - you had so many qualities though, Martin, that all the qualifications and money in the world could not buy; your infectious personality, your zest & enthusiasm, your natural likeability factor & that wonderland knack of making people laugh and smile with your endless stories and anecdotes. You were a great footballer and, judging by the posts I’ve seen, a much loved and highly respected coach as well; certainly the instructions I was given when playing alongside you in school football & for Raynes Park & Sutton Rovers were always very clear ie ‘..win the bloody ball and give it to Firmo !!!..’. The endless ‘dawn to dusk’ kickabouts in Brookfield Park referred to by Simon below are another abiding memory; everyone involved will recall your own running commentary of ‘Firmo’s past one, past another….’ & so on as you turned us all inside out for the umpteenth time !!! Look out for Phil (Boyce) up there mate & make a start on putting the old team together again ! RIP Martin.
